'How often should I wash my hijabs? Can these be machine washed? Can I put them in the dryer?' Questions we get asked on a regular basis, read our step by step guide and tips below to maximise the longevity of your Coverette hijabs...
'How often should I wash my hijabs?'
A common misconception is to wash your hijab straight away after one wear- which you can totally do if the hijab has an unpleasant odour lingering on it or an oily food stain from last nights dinner! Otherwise, wash the hijab after three wears to maintain it's original colour and fibres.
'How do I wash them?'
For all Coverette hijabs (minus the jersey collection) we recommend hand washing, simply because of its gentle approach and accuracy to reach the specific spot(s) you are targeting e.g. a food stain. Personally I like to make time every 6 weeks to hand wash mine, it's so therapeutic!
Be sure to hand wash them quickly in lukewarm water to avoid colour bleeding and squeeze lightly. Don’t add a variety of detergents, you'll only need 1 table spoon of washing powder.
Follow the method below for the best results (all customers receive a care tips package with their order)
1. Prepare all your hijabs and separate them according colour categories e.g. black, navy and bottle green would be classed as darks
2. Fill a bucket with lukewarm water and add 1 table spoon of washing powder
3. Then place the hijabs in the bucket and rinse each one under cool running water, whilst squeezing it lightly at the same time
4. Empty the bucket, refill with fresh water and repeat the process on the rest of your load(s)
5. Allow the hijabs to dry naturally and iron them before wearing
'How shall I dry them?'
Don't use heat, so that means avoiding the dryer - no matter how much quicker it speeds up the process! It's vital to think of washing your hijabs like washing your hair, the gentler you are, the more luxurious it feels after it's been washed. We advice air drying, so spread your hijabs out, let the natural breeze hit them and allow the fibres in your hijab to breathe. If the weather isn't too bad hang them on your washing line outside- otherwise spread them indoors on a drying rack.
General tips
- Never leave a stain for too long the longer you leave it, the more time it will take to remove!
- Always air dry your hijabs
- Don't use silver safety pins- avoid these at all costs, they will create millions of holes in your hijabs!
- Wash your bonnet cap as often as you wash your hair- 2/3 times a week (keep a few back ups in your collection to rotate when the others in the wash)
